I am currently conducting research on sialyltransferase ST8 alpha-N-acetyl-neuraminide alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase (ST8Sia6), which is suspected to be associated with cancerization. The cell surface is covered with glycans that bind to proteins and lipids. Cancerization of cells results in increased modification of sialic acid, an acidic sugar in the structure of these glycans. It is believed that this change in glycan structure is associated with malignant transformation by which cells acquire the ability to infiltrate and metastasize, but the detailed molecular mechanisms remain unknown. My recent work, including an analysis of malignant transformation, has revealed that ST8Sia6 is strongly expressed in a wide range of cancer cells and is associated with more malignant forms of cancer. Therefore, I am now aiming to elucidate the mechanism of malignant transformation associated with ST8Sia6 at the molecular level and to apply findings of this study to cancer treatment. Bioscience is a complicated area of study, veiled in mystery. There are not many data scientists who can conduct both dry-lab and wet-lab experiments. I would like to become a scientist who can solve mysteries and find questions for further research using both dry-lab and wet-lab approaches, thereby saving many lives.
