Pectin, which is a soluble fiber, is known to induce morphological changes in the villi of the small intestines, but the underlying mechanisms and physiological significance remain unknown. In my research, I will investigate the effects of dietary fibers on intestinal epithelial cells at the molecular level, using pectin as a model molecule with the goal of elucidating currently unknown physiological regulatory functions of the villi of the small intestines, which play a role in nutrient absorption. I am currently conducting experiments using mouse models of malnutrition to support my hypothesis that the physiological significance of the morphological changes in the villi of the small intestines is to prevent the organism from developing malnutrition by enhancing their nutritional absorption capacity. Although dietary fibers are effective for preventing various kinds of lifestyle-related diseases, intake of dietary fibers has decreased each year. Therefore, by conducting studies on dietary fibers, I would like to contribute to maintaining and promoting health among many people as part of preventive medicine.
