Glycans consist of chains of monosaccharides such as glucose, galactose, and N-acetylglucosamine and modify proteins and lipids. Glycans are associated with various physiological phenomena, including immune reactions, fertilization, and biogenesis through regulating cellular recognition and signaling. Among monosaccharides that are components of glycans, I am focusing on sialic acid, which is an acidic nonose at the non-reducing terminals of glycans. Although the main metabolic pathways of sialic acid in vertebrates have already been revealed, it remains unclear how the enzymes and transporters involved in metabolization play a role in disease pathogenesis. At present, I am conducting research to elucidate the association between enzymes involved in synthesis and degradation of sialic acid and diseases as well as the biological significance of these enzymes. In the future, I want to work as a government official who can contribute to society through applying expertise, knowledge, and logical thinking acquired in the CIBoG program.
